With Handheld Contact iOS version 8.4 (and higher) and Android version 3.1.10.0 (and higher) a new feature was applied to the Mobile Mapping settings.  It is a proximity search based off the starting location specified.  It is listed as 'Search nearby'.  This article will explain how this new feature will work.

iOS (iPhone/iPad):

  1. Open the Handheld Contact software and from the Home view, choose Mobile Mapping.
  2. In the upper right corner will be a lightning bolt icon.  Tap on this for settings.
  3. The Radius option will be the number of Kilometers/Miles (Unit Measurement) from the starting location that will be used for 'Search nearby'.
  4. Tap on 'Select starting location'.  This will provide a choice of 3 options:
    1. Current location - (Default) This is the GPS location of the physical device.
    2. My record's address - The Work address of the 'My Record' contact will be used as the starting location.
    3. Custom location - This can be defined to any location.  If this option is selected, a 'Search' bar will appear and can be used to search/enter the custom location.
  5. After all map settings are selected, return to the Mobile Mapping view.
  6. Select 'Search nearby'.  A popup will appear requesting States/Provinces to search by.
  7. A list of the States/Provinces will appear.  Choose the State/Province you want based off starting location.
  8. Press 'Go' button to begin the proximity search.
  9. Use the map that opens to zoom in/out as needed.  Tap on the pins provided to see the Contact Details.
  10. When a contact pin is highlighted a new banner appears with options for 'Show Contact' and 'Show Directions'.
  11. Pressing 'Show Directions' will send the address to Google Maps to plan a route.

NOTE:  In Step 6 above, an 'Alert' popup may appear.  It will read "If you are located in North America, please update My Record on device to include proper Country.  International customers will need to sync State/Province drop down from Handheld Contact desktop application".  Here are the steps needed to resolve this message:

North America: Return to the Handheld Contact Home view.  Choose Contacts and tap on 'My Record' link in top left corner.  Open this contact record.  Press Edit.  Scroll down to find 'Country' field.  Enter appropriate Country where you are located (United States/Canada).  Press Done to save the changes.  Return to Mobile Mapping and repeat steps.

International:  Open the Handheld Contact desktop application on the same PC/server as the Act! database.  Along the left click on 'Field Mapping Info'.  Choose Change.  In the window that opens, move to line 22 where Country is listed.  Scroll to the far right and check the box for 'Sync Drop-down'.  Press OK to the warning and choose OK to save.  After the PC software syncs to the device, you can sync the device then proceed with Mobile Mapping.

Android:

  1. Open the Handheld Contact software and from the Home view, choose Mobile Mapping.
  2. In the upper right corner will be the overflow menu (3 dots).  Tap this for settings.
  3. Select 'Radius/unit' to change the Radius and Unit of measurement (Kilometres vs Miles).
  4. Tap on 'Select starting location'.  There will be an option for 'Starting location' with 3 options:
    1. Current location - (Default) This is the GPS location of the physical device.
    2. My record's address - The Work address of the 'My Record' contact will be used as the starting location.
    3. Custom location - This can be defined to any location. If this option is selected, a second option for 'Enter custom location' is available and can be used to enter the custom location.
  5. After all map settings are selected, return to the Mobile Mapping view.
  6. Select 'Search nearby'.  Two drop-down options will appear.  The first is to set the proper State/Province.  The second is to select the specific State/Province needed.
  7. Press 'Go' button in top right corner to begin the proximity search.
  8. A list of the total number of contacts found will appear.  To see these contacts on a map based off location/radius, press the map icon in the upper right corner.
  9. All contacts will be calculated into coordinates and mapped.  This process may take time to complete on the initial run.  (Approx 100 contacts takes 1 minute).
  10. Use the map that opens to zoom in/out as needed.  Tap on the pins provided to see the Contact Name.
  11. Select a Contact pin and press the directions/Google Maps icon to get passed into the Google Maps application to plan a route.
