If you have recently upgraded to Act! 2013 or Act! v16 and/or are using Handheld Contact on a Windows 8 PC, you may get the following error when adding a new user or during syncing: “Thread was being aborted.  The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel".

Here are the current workarounds:

New users – Getting error on 'Test login' when trying to add account:

  1. Close Handheld Contact.
  2. In Windows Explorer, find Handheld Contact installation folder, usually C:\Program Files(x86)\Handheld Contact\HHC Enterprise Edition.  Note: C:\Program Files(x86)\Keystroke\HHC Enterprise Edition is for v4.2.10.0 and lower.
  3. Find 'settings.hhc' file and open it with Notepad.
  4. The 5th line of the file is:
    <HHCServer>https://sync.wires-end.net/HHC2005/</HHCServer>

    Change is to <HHCServer>http://sync.wires-end.net/HHC2005/</HHCServer>
    Just remove "s" from "https".
  5. Save the file.
  6. Re-open Handheld Contact now and you will be able to add your account.

Existing users – Getting error when trying to sync:

  1. On the PC/server, go to the Handheld Contact menu, click on Tools and choose Options.
  2. Remove “s” from “https” of the Server’s URL.
  3. Save.
  4. Try again the syncing process.
