How do I upgrade to the latest Handheld Contact Classic version?
Posted by Craig S, Last modified by Craig S on 30 August 2024 04:29 PM

This article will explain all of the directions required in order to upgrade Handheld Contact to the latest software that was recently announced.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:  Open Handheld Contact Classic on your mobile device(s) and manually synchronize.  After a successful sync then proceed with the following directions.  This step would help prevent loss of any data entered onto the mobile app.  Additionally, this process will run a 'Send all data' from the PC/server.  If you sync a lot of data, you may need to organize a time for the full sync to occur.

Note: If Handheld Contact v7 (or higher) has already been installed onto the PC/server, then the installation steps for the PC/Server below are not to be followed.  Instead, the steps will be replaced with a 'Resend all data' procedure.  This will be required before the mobile device directions are followed.

PC/Server:

  1. On the same PC where Handheld Contact resides, open the Windows 'Control Panel'.
  2. Go to 'Programs and Features' and search for Handheld Contact in the list of installed apps.
  3. What version number is installed?
    1. If you have version 6.x.x.x installed:
      1. Proceed here and download version 7.0.x.x.
      2. After the download, run the installer file and install to all defaulted locations.
      3. Handheld Contact will upgrade and install over top of the existing software.
      4. The upgraded version will attempt to open automatically.
      5. Once opened, click on Maintenance along the top and choose 'Synchronize Users'.  Check the box for 'Select all' and press 'Sync Now' button.
      6. Proceed to the device directions below for the next set of steps.
    2. If you have version 4.x.x.x installed:
      1. Right click on the installed Handheld Contact app and choose 'Uninstall'.
      2. Complete the steps to uninstall Handheld Contact.
      3. Proceed here and download version 7.0.x.x.
      4. After the download, run the installer file and install to all defaulted locations.
      5. A new installation of Handheld Contact will occur and then the update will attempt to open automatically.
      6. If you had the previous install of Handheld Contact in a custom location, a pop up will appear and ask for the location of the settings.hhc file.
      7. If Handheld Contact was installed in the default directory, then the settings/configuration will be copied and moved into the new version.
      8. Once opened, click on Maintenance along the top and choose 'Synchronize Users'.  Check the box for 'Select all' and press 'Sync Now' button.
      9. Proceed to the device directions below for the next set of steps.

iOS (iPhone/iPad):

  1. Delete the existing Handheld Contact application.  Hold the icon from the home screen and wait for a pop-up to appear.  Choose 'Remove App'.  On the next pop-up choose 'Delete App'.  For some older devices there will be an 'X' that appears on the icon.  Tap on this first and then choose 'Delete'.
  2. After the application has been removed the new app has to be installed.  Go to the App Store app on the device and search for 'Handheld Contact Classic'.  This will be a new application so choose 'Get' button.  You can also GO HERE as well.
  3. Launch the application after install.
  4. Enter the Handheld Contact Username (email address) and Password.
  5. There is no need to make changes to the Server.  Press 'LOGIN' button.
  6. Once the synchronization on the PC/server side is completed (from above) proceed to press 'Sync Now' on the device.
  7. If you attempted to sync the mobile device before the PC/server is completed, you will receive an error message.  Please wait until the sync is finished before you proceed again.

Android:

  1. Delete the existing Handheld Contact application.  Open the Android Operating System 'Settings'.  Choose 'Apps' and then find 'Handheld Contact' in the list of installed apps.  Tap on it and choose 'Uninstall' button.
  2. After the application has been removed the new app has to be installed.  Go to the Google Play Store app on the device and search for 'Handheld Contact Classic'.  This will be a new application so choose 'Install' button.  You can also GO HERE as well.
  3. Launch the application after install using 'Open' button.
  4. If there are any requests to allow permissions, choose 'Allow' for all.
  5. Enter the Handheld Contact Username (email address) and Password.
  6. Press the 'Sign in' button.
  7. Once the synchronization on the PC/server side is completed (from above) proceed to select the 'Sync Now' option and choose 'Continue' button.
  8. If the computer sync is not completed, you can choose 'Sync later' option.  When finished, re-open Handheld Contact Classic and press the 'Sync Now' button in the top right corner.
